Why is my tv in mute without the mute button on?

My tv went mute last night but I click the mute button on and off and nothing happens. It remains mute. I went to settings/soundout / it's on optical, is that correct?

Norma Maldonado that depends on how and what you have connected. Let us know what your TV's model is so we can try to assist you.

Hi,

Do you have anything connected to the optical output port on the TV, like a soundbar or stereo receiver etc?

If nothing connected switch the TV sound setting back to TV or internal speakers or whatever is indicated for the sound to come from the TV and not an external speaker system

Chosen Solution
  1. Open the Settings menu either by using the button on your remote or if your remote doesn't have a Settings button, press the Home/Smart button, then click the Settings icon.
  2. Navigate to the Audio/Sound menu.
  3. Choose Sound Out, then select TV Speakers.

Try this! This might help you!

Regards,

Lewis

@arthurnicholls

What is the model number of the TV?

What is the signal source i.e. video and audio, for the TV e.g. TV antenna, streaming device, modem etc.

If not an antenna can you prove if the sound from the signal source works on another TV?

If not an antenna, have you tried a different signal input type (if possible) from the signal source to the TV e.g. HDMI, Component video + audio, AV video + audio?

Is the TV audio normally heard coming from the TV speakers or an external speaker system connected to the TV?

Brilliant! That actually worked. After following all the other steps found via Google, a simple restart was all it needed. Thank you!

My external speakers set on optical for sound worked great. After pushing a few buttons, The TV went into mute mode and will not come out of it for optical. It will go on using the TV in the TV sound, but it will not work with my external speakers (optical setting). The mute button just keeps popping up. It will not come out of mute. I tried the mute on the TV, the fire stick, neither work. So aggravating. Any kind words of help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried turning the TV on and off as well as the components. Didn't work. I tried changing back to TV. And then optical didn't work. TV soundworks fine, but I love my external speakers.
