Why did my Black and Decker toaster stop working?

This is a 2 part question. MY Black and Decker toaster stopped working. If I hold down the leaver, it WILL toast bread but the leaver will not stay down to toast the bread. But 1st, something I’ve never seen before. On the bottom of the unit there are 4 screws, one of them, on first glance, LOOKS like a regular flat headed screw. BUT, on closer examination, that screw has a built in “bar” across the slot. This prohibits the screw from ever being unscrewed. Very, very strange. Incidentally, the repair guide for the Black and Decker toaster (on ifixit) says the unit has 4 Philip headed screws. That is wrong. It has 3 Philip headed screws and that bizarre looking screw. Has anyone ever run across that weird screw ? Until I can figure out how to unscrew it, I can not proceed. Thanks for any input.

Hi @ramses2 ,

Most probably it is a tamperproof security screw, designed to prevent access unless you have the correct screwdriver "bit".

Post an image of the screwhead and perhaps someone will know the type and be able to advise.

here's how to do this Adding images to an existing question

@ramses2 absolutely agree with @jayeff Sure sounds like a tamperproof screw. You can find a lot of those screwdrivers online to remove it. Once you have it out, replace with a regular Phillips Head screw from your local hardware store. Makes life easier later on.

Thank you jayeff and old turkey. that bizarre screw head is a new one on me. Never saw anything remotely like it before.

Update: This is a somewhat obscure security bit that goes by a few different names. On the iFixit website, this bit goes by the name "Spanner". iFixit has 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm versions for their 4mm screwdriver handle included in most kits available in the dropdown list here, as well as 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm bits for the 1/4" screwdriver handle included in the Mahi and Manta sets available in the dropdown list here
