Toshiba TV no picture but still has sound

Hi there, I have searched through the previous questions and probably know the answer (T-Con Board) but just thought I’d check for opinions.

I have a two year old Toshiba TV 48U7653DB that looses picture a few minutes after turning on but still has sound.

I have tested with a torch and there is no picture/movement visible. I have also switched the tv off overnight and the problem still occurs

It is currently connected to a Virgin TiVo box only

If it is the T-Con Board is this something I can get and do myself and is it worth it etc?

Many thanks

T Con board generally an easy fix if you are reasonably handy. If you’ve never taken anything apart like this before my advice is keep it that way. There are some fiddly, easily damaged connectors on the T Con and if you are unfamiliar with them you risk causing more damage. Not to mention some nasty voltages in there so if you are not aware of what or what not to touch, drop it off at your local repair shop.

Are you using wifi or hard wired with ethernet cable?

Hi joe, I haven’t connected the tv to WiFi or Ethernet but the TiVo box is via Ethernet

Ok, normally I would recommend try software upgrade thru usb drive but not seeing any for your model, you can try a software upgrade by connecting to internet and going to system-option menu and choose software upgrade, it might say you have the latest firmware or it might update.

Forgot to say I think it's better to try the update hard wired, meaning connected by ethernet than trying it thru wifi.

Thanks joe, I’ll link up the WiFi and see what it says. The picture is still good almost at an hour now!?

Ok, best to update wired to ethernet instead of wifi, more stable connection. It may have been one of your devices, a cable box can mess up a tv, most of the time if you shut the cable box all the way down wait a few minutes then power it back on, a lot of the time that will clear up a problem.

Hi @rattiegirl ,

As you didn't say what you've tried the following is just to eliminate other possibilities.

Have you tried different types of signal source inputs e.g. Component video, composite video, co-ax etc to check if the picture stays on, e.g from a DVD player or similar?

Can you view the TV menu screens when the signal source picture is not there?

Hi @jayeff, thanks for your response

I will admit I am slightly confused; I have come home tonight and switched on the tv and it took about 10 minutes to loose picture. Unable to view the menu or any thing when it goes.

I turned it off and straight back on and the picture is back again. I linked it to the wii box and it all looked good, it took another 15 minutes to loose picture again.

I switched it off and on again and it is now nearly 30 minutes and still has picture.

I have purchased a new hdmi lead, now have 3 to use! I do not have a dvd/scart devise and I have previously tried the hdmi leads in all 4 ports.

Just to add, I purchased the new hdmi last week because the tv and TiVo box seemed to be intermittently not connecting and I would loose picture but could still bring up the tv and virgin menus, I looked into it and it seemed to be a fault with the settings on the tv conflicting with the TiVo box so when i first lost picture over the weekend I thought it was the same problem until I found I couldn’t view any menus and began a different fault search etc.. Not sure if this fault could have caused the new picture issues...
