Just a thought. One possible scenario that may explain this behaviour is a system setting has has been toggled to place any active programs on pause or relegated to a background process which then processes the home desktop to be displayed whenever new notifications are received (for example new email, system or app updates etc) so that immediate responses to the notification by the user can be undertaken if necessary. Then again, it's late a night, I am a bit tipsy and therefore my advice could be full of crap, so take my thoughts with a pinch of salt! lol
