What's the next step?

I bought an iMac A1207 from a PC repair shop for 111.50. Someone had dropped it off for repair and never came back to get it. The guy who owns the shop knows nothing about macs and gave it to me for a steal. What he told me: It powers on and the front LED lights up and stays on but there is no screen activity at all. The bezel is cracked in a few spots and has some chips so I think it was dropped/fell.

I know a bit about iMacs as I've done a few upgrades on my A1174 but I'm a bit unsure what to do next. I consulted the Service Source manual and performed some basic tests (PRAM, SMC, RAM). From what I can gather, the problem is a bad logic/mother board but after resetting the SMC and restarting the fan blows very loud and I get no front LED light at all as well as the black screen.

I'm out of tests to perform and have no idea what the loud fan means. Anyone got any ideas/advice or should I just hit up eBay and shop for a new logic board?

Thanks in advance.:)

Great buy. Now lets see if we can get it to pay of. There are diagnostic lights to the right of the RAM slots. Take a look at those and see how they change when you attempt a start-up. Do you have the original installation disks or a retail 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 system disk?

Thanks for your quick response. So I jimmied off the bezel to check out the LEDs . Lights 1 and 2 come on but not 3. Somehow the display data cable connector was disconnected (screws missing) and when I reconnected it there was no difference. Any thoughts?

Oh, and I tried booting from my SL install disc but still had the black screen.

LED #3

Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON • when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

LED #4

Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be • ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.
