2010 iMac was ok! prepped for sale & system restore messed it up!

Hi,

I wanted to clear the business mid 2010 imac for sale so I reformatted the drive, then went to reinstall OS and it wouldnt work!

I did hours of research, read that the OS that it shipped with in 2010 is needed and the “restore from internet” feature wont work for me. I can’t seem to “restore MACOS from disk” for some reason thus my reason for trying the internet option. When I select restore from internet, it downloads something and takes forever, then prompts to get started with new OS only to say, “can’t locate a copy of MACOS on on your hard drive”. Any ideas??

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Thanks so much!

Just a note to those who read this, at first I booted from DVD and it started going through the motions. When it got to the screen asking me where to install the new MacOs, it would not let me select my hard drive, it was just greyed out.

With some internet research I found an article stating that I should reformat the drive, rename to “Macintosh HD”, the way it originally came, and then reset the partition size. This was done by going to disk utilities after the reformat, clicking on “partition”, dragging the bottom right corner slider to a smaller sized rectangle, click apply. Then drag it back to the full size of the rectangle and hit apply.

I booted from the Snow Leopard DVD once more and sure enough, I could now select my hard drive!

All set and the computer I thought was a goner (and told the HD was dead) is now good as new thanks to ifixit!
