Keyboard stopped working after macOS complete reinstall.

Got a MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar (A1706) second hand from a friend of mine and we formatted it together and after formating the keyboard stopped working. It doesn’t even work on boot (eg. I can’t boot to recovery or reset SMC). Could it be that there is a problem on the software side or did something hardware wise break and it was unlinked to the format?

The Touch Bar works with no problems as well the Trackpad.

Everything works except for the keyboard. Even the backlight works.

I have also disconnected and reconnected the battery to reset the SMC

I did the format with a USB drive. I first booted into the recovery and wiped the disk. Then I shut it down and inserted the usb and proceeded to install. I installed the latest Mojave version.

I am now planning to go back to Sierra to see if the problem is software related.

Does an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard work?

by

@danj Yes, I was able to connect my bluetooth keyboard on macOS Setup through a glitch on the right click menu. A bluetooth keyboard is my only choice since I don't have an adaptor to connect a wired keyboard.

I installed macOS Mojave and then updated to Mojave Beta and I'm now on the Catalina Developer Beta 2. Some friend told me to install the first OS that my Mac came with but I'm not too sure if I should do it.

by

@thboud - OK, that changes things!

I would only recommend going with Mojave unless you are a developer! But until you have a stable system with Mojave I would hold off with any beta.

Go back into your recovery partition and wipe the drive and re-install the original OS the system came with (a special cut of Sierra)

Does your system work with it?

by

@danj Ok so I'll install Sierra. The thing is that with Mojave the keyboard also didn't work. And I can't really access the recovery partition without a keyboard.

First go into your System Report - Open > About This Mac > System Report >Hardware and click on USB. Post a snapshot of the upper section so we can see hierarchy and then switch to the lower doing the same so we can see discreet hubs and devices listed. You may need to slide the window to get the other part of the listing.

Then go into your preferences settings and open the Keyboard panel, click on the Input Sources and take a snapshot of it as well.

Sadly, it does look like the keyboard logic has failed. Sorry

At this point you’ll need to visit an Apple Store and have them repair it. I’m not sure if you have a true keyboard issue or if the logic board has a failure.

I think your friend had a liquid spill which damaged the circuitry.

I don't see the keyboard or the touchpad USB connections in the report. I don't have a system to check right now Monday I'll have access to one.

I believe that the trackpad and keyboard connections are under SPI. I am posting a picture of the SPI right now so you can have a look at it.

by

mmm ... Something new! Your right! The connection is through SPI.

While it's clear your systems SPI hub is working I would have expected a listing of the connected devices down stream. Is there something below?

Until I can check things on Monday on a good system I don't know which way to go.
