Make sure you do your research. I ended up having to do two or three separate jailbreaks because I didn't bother to look around for more information.

The current Firmware for the iPhone 3G is 4.2.1

The current Firmware for the iPhone 3GS and 4 (att GSM) is 4.3.3 and for the 4 (verizon CDMA) is 4.2.8
