Hi Alan,

There are no USB3 ports on the model you have, so the data connection would default to a USB 2.0 standard, this happens as when we plug a USB 2.0 hub into a a USB 3.0 ported Mac/PC too, it defaults to USB 2.0 because the one link in the chain is slow and bottlenecks the others.

If you need some speed!!

I would see if you have another machine on the network, and can copy over the Gigabit ethernet, from that iMac to another machine or NAS that you could copy the files off faster,(something with USB 3.0 or so on…) sounds like a mission but for huge files and editing projects, should save you a ton of time.

Hope This Helps

A slight correction here: The devices that share that common downlink port from the system are effected, so a USB2 hub and its link to the system will only be 480. But using a different port on the system will allow those devices on it to use the full USB 3.x data rate the system offers (discreetly or using a USB 3.x hub).

Think how an Ethernet switch allows slower links to work with higher speed links within the same switch. The data flow is what the device offers it can't offer more.
