Random starting problems 2001 Avensis

I have a British made 2001 Toyota Avensis with a 2.0 litre 3S-FE engine. When it runs, it runs very well; smooth, good power, everything right. The problem is that it randomly refuses to start. When it starts, it’s always immediately. If it doesn’t start within a couple of seconds, it’s a lost cause for that day. Usually, it will start up fine in a day or two. Cool mornings seems to be the most problematic time. When it refuses to start, there is no sense that there is any combustion occurring at all. My mechanic has thoroughly gone through the fuse box and connections. He’s had it for several days in his garage, and it will always start. However, normal driving seems to change something. A friend of mine pointed out that it’s strange that there is no odor of gas coming from the tailpipe when trying to start it. Any suggestions? Please help. Thanks.
