Proper way to use MBP with external devices (monitor, hard drive)

Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro 2017, almost always connected to an external monitor, and a USB Hub for connecting external hard drives and audio interfaces.

My question is regarding proper usage of external devices, because when I wake the laptop, I’m presented with a lot of warnings about unproper way of disconnecting the hard drives, sometimes several warnings in one night, as if the hard drive is connected and then disconnected during the night.

Do I have to always disconnect manually each drive? I am feeling that i am missing something important about energy saving settings.

Sorry for not seeing your question sooner.

USB-C hubs have there issues! You might want to try another unit from another maker.

As far as USB-A connected drives connected to your hub when your system goes into sleep mode the USB-C ports power lines can shutdown so the Hub looses its power. You really want to use a self powered drive so the drive doesn’t loose power and can hold its state. Otherwise you’ll need to get into the habit of disconnecting the drive by dismounting them before you put the system to sleep.

Does your Monitor have a built-in USB hub? You may want to give it a try.
