replacement superdrive does not work as it should

The original matshita drive in my MBP failed so I decided to replace it with another which I obtained from a MB Air external optical drive. The replacement is a Sony/NEC model. When I boot, it is recognized by disk utility and works as it should. However, when I go through a sleep cycle (ie put it to sleep and bring it out of sleep) it doesnt mount any of the media and hangs when I launch disk utility! What gives? Is it a compatibility issue? I googled this but could not find anything, please help!

It could be a compatibility issue, I would check MacTracker to see if there are any issues with compatibility. Have u downloaded the 1.4 and 3.0 firmware updates for the optical drives on your machine? I also have read on many forums, including this one where many-many people are having problems with external optical drives, its a hit or miss thing. I replaced my optical drive with the Matshita UJ-868A drive and i have not had any problems. I found it for less than $80 and its the newest drive out for macbooks.

Sorry to hear that. Check here or on Ebay, i found the 868A on Ebay, the vendor had over 90 of these drives so u should be fine. The drive was brand new.
