Can I boot from ext. HD?

I get a blinking ? on startup. I can't reboot from DVD because CD/DVD drive isn't not working. Can I reboot from copy of startup DVD from an external drive?

Options

Sure, if you connect an external Firewire optical drive or hard drive, you can boot from your restore media and load the OS by holding option at boot time and selecting your startup disk.

I load the OS on all my laptops from external hard drives/optical drives, just because the old optical drives in iBooks tend to be problematic, especially with burned media, and often don't get so far as fully installing the OS.

You can boot your computer from an external drive with an operating system already installed on it. You can NOT boot from an external optical drive though.
