Why can I not connect to iTunes?

When I connect my iPod touch to my computer iTunes tells me that the device is unable to be connected. I have tried on many computers. What can I do to fix this?

Options

I used an off-brand cable to connect my device instead of the Apple cable and it worked just fine!
