How to I replace the clutch cover on a Mid 2012 A1278?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows of a guide on replacing the clutch cover on a Mid 2012 MBP (13 Inch), mine’s a bit broken and while I can easily source a replacement I’m not sure how complicated the job is.

Thanks

There are two ways go about it:

  • Take the display assembly off MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Display Replacement then you can slide the old unit off and put on the new one.
  • Carefully peel off the rest of the broken unit without damaging the antenna unit underneath, then carefully snap the new one on. If the part is old it will be brittle and will likely crack putting it back on.

Slide the clutch assembly approx 3/8" to the right and then gently rock it back and forth, ever-so-lightly squeezing it some (not so much as to crack or perhaps further damage) and then lift it off from left side to right. Going slow is paramount.

If the clutch cover resists sliding to the right consider using the flat edge of a spudger placed at the top where the plastic is likely stronger and oh so gently try pushing the clutch cover to the right. Often a cover appears stuck but it's usually just age and grime holding the cover in place.

Just remember, go slow and be gentle.

No eternal gratuity is necessary. Just a simple sigh of relief the cover is off will be sufficient. :-)
