You’ll need to test the lid sensor. Get a small magnet and steel paperclip.

Slide the paper clip along the left side of the inside surface of the lid edge to locate the lid magnet. Carefully fold the lid down and make note the location on the uppercase top. Now place the magnet along this location does the display turn off. You may need to check other locations to see if the lid magnet was incorrectly placed in the lid.

If the display won’t shutdown into sleep mode you’ll need to check the battery checker on the left side, is it working?

Follow this guide MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009 Logic Board Replacement to Step 7. Now jump down to Step 19 to disconnect the Battery checker/Hall sensor unit. Now you can remove the two screws holding the tester board to replace it.

It might very well be a worn out resistor along the SMC lid sensor circuitry, but that's a component level repair.

@danj i have the 13" version :D

Well, that doesn't help. You selected the 15" model.

Lets start from square one... What is your exact system open About this Mac and star a snapshot of the systems info and paste that here.

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM, this worked on my MacBook Air when this happened
