Magnavox VCR /DVD recorder combo , VCR turns off after 5-10 seconds

I have a Magnavox VCR/DVD-Recorder combo , I just purchased in order to transfer old VHS tapes to DVD. I just realized the VCR shuts off completely after about 5-10 seconds . It doesn`t just stop the tape, it turns off the unit. I tried the DVD and that one works without any problems . Can anybody tell me what the problem is and how to fix it?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Our similar machine won't stay on longer than 5 seconds and shuts down before we even have time to put in a tape. We finally did get a tape in but it shut down right away. These are not 'copyrighted' tapes. Anyone got any solutions?

Good day, the devices in question may be older model VCR’s. The issue is the drive belts are old and stretched out or broken. The only way to get this device to work again is replace all drive belts and give the gear a good dose of grease. I had this issue with an older Realistic VCR Model 19. I am going to find parts and attempt a repair. So, you may have to locate a repair shop in your area which may be difficult because the repair shops are scarce.

You are copying something that has a copyright protection. It will shut down when it receives a copyright signal.

I have the same problem and cleaning the little infrared thing solved that but now an idler(correct name?) won’t go back far enough to grab the ribbon
