Bad RAM or SSD?

Hi Everyone,

Ok so my mid 2014 13” retina macbook pro had that crazy screen issue and then crashed, now the dreaded 3 beeps. The very strange thing is when it first crashed I tried to reboot it, which it did, then crashed pretty much immediately with a weird screen. I think it rebooted one more time and crashed even quicker. Then when I tried to reboot it would give me either one beep OR it would make a chime but no screen action. I think that happened maybe three times. I then tried all the different key configurations, nothing. I cleaned up the inside of the laptop, nothing. I used a hairdryer, nothing. I then baked the logic board, nothing. All the same three beeps break three beeps. Dos not respond to anything.

I am not too concerned apart from getting a few things off of the SSD. Now I then put my SSD into my partners 15” mid 2015 retina, I hear the chime but then just a blank screen? Also it needs to be plugged in to power to work or it just tells me the batt is dead (which it isn’t).

Once I put back in the original SSD bank into the 15” it works perfectly again….could this mean I actually have an SSD issue with my 13”?

Thanks,

“ I then baked the logic board, nothing “ What??? What did you do ?

by

It's a thing. Reworking the solder.

by

It is up to you, of course, but after 35 years working with computer hardware I wouldn't dream of doing this.

Is this the model with soldered in RAM, by the way?

Have you tried connecting SSD to an external USB to test?

by

Ya soldered in. I understand that. This technique has worked for me twice before with a mac and xbox. Anyway, putting my SSD into the other laptop what should I expect? Could my SSD be corrupt? Anyway to test this? Thanks

by

If your SSD is corrupt, you can try removing it and then inserting it into another computer. You can then attempt to repair the drive, etc.

Sadly the three beeps is a RAM error as you can see here: About Mac startup tones

Hi Dan. Thanks yeah. I guess my main question now is the install of my SSD in another Mac to recover files. Any advice in this?

I use OWC - Envoy Pro SSD case. You might want to look on eBay or Amazon for a unit as well. Often times once someone uses it they turn around and sell it.

by

Cool thanks. I was aware of this unit and will most likely order one, just where I am it will take a while to arrive and wondered how putting my SSD in another MacBook would work out as work wise getting those files ASAP would be great. I should probably try booting in recovery mode and see if I can access it.

If you have access to a second Mac system which you can connect your system to via Target Disk Mode that might work here.
