resetting password MacBook Pro

my computer macbook pro is on the “choose user account” on the reset password in utility mode and shows no users to choose , as in no choices, nothing, just empty, all i really want to do is not lose my personal files , all of which are on my desktop. it won’t recognize my original password and user name nor my new one, please help

At boot press the option key and enter the recovery partition where you will find the terminal utility. Open it and digit resetpassword in terminal window, that will open a new window with your account from where you should be able to set or change password. That should hopefully allow you to get back into your account correctly.
