Computer froze and I tired to restart but now stalls?

Was using Illustrator when program froze and i tried to force quit but weird never happened to me before didnt work and the whole computer froze. So i shut it off for a few seconds and when i restart it stays gray and stalls. I put in Snow leopard disk and went to disk utilites and got an error message "Invalid Leaf record Count should be 263 instead of 265"??? So it said repair disk and when i tried it said i have to back up files and reinstall OS. Now here is the question how can i copy my hard drive to an external hard drive before i reinstall and is it possible??

Plug in an external firewire drive. Install a system on it from your system installation disk. Restart holding down the option key and select the external drive. Drag your user folder over first. Next any other things that you don't have the installation disks for. Now restart from your system install disk, use disk utilities, reformat the internal drive, use the write zeros option to map out any bad blocks. Give it one partition. Reinstall the system. Use migration assistant to move your user data in from the external drive.
