Can you use an xbox controller

My dad got a regular wireless Xbox comtroller for my son For Christmas. I am trying to figure out if it will work for Xbox one or if we need to exchange.

I'm an idiot. The front just says XBOX controller. I finally read the box and it is for XBOX ONE. Thank you.
