I'm not sure what you mean by that but you are free to replace the screen on your iPhone with an aftermarket one.
You'll lose true tone functionality but keep auto brightness when the screen is replaced.
If you want to retain the true tone display function on the phone the display chip data must be copied from the screen that came with the phone to the replacement screen.

It's not illegal to do that, the only part I know that is illegal is if you buy refurbished original screens from one country to your country e.g from China to U.S because apple / customs don't allow getting replacement parts with the apple logo on it.
