Your model number and serial numbers are on the bottom of the stand. Input the serial number here to find out exactly what you have

I hope you are up to this. This is a big project!

There is two parts to the process:

The first part is removing the logic board and the center fan to gain access to the hinge assembly cover so you can replace the hinge assembly. Here’s the process iMac 27" Repair - Removing the Fan and Logic Board

The second part is you also need to remove the foot stand from the outside afterwards! Apple iMac stand removal with lock down and raise with a business card

You’ll need to carefully peel the shielding foil from the hinge cover and remove it to gain access to the hinge screws. Make sure you have a good Torx driver and I use a little toluene to soften the screw seal material around the hinge screws using a cotton swab (Q-Tip) as the screws are hard to get out.

Here is the needed parts:

  • Hinge Mechanism - P/N 922-9878
  • Hinge mount screws (6) - 922-9238 (if you need to replace any)

Only needed if the foot is damaged

  • Foot Stand - 922-9834
  • Stand Screws (8) - 922-8174 (if you need to replace any)

Hi Dan, thanks for this. Is there a single set of instructions step by step showing one how to replace the broken hinge mechanism? I see there is a lot of information floating around on different threads, but would appreciate it if there was one single post which takes you through the steps of rectifying this issue in detail... Additionally, where can one purchase this replacement part? Thanks Dan!!

We don't have a guide as I explained in my answer above. It sounds like this is pushing your skills, best to find someone who can do this for you. Look for an independent computer repair person skilled on iMac repairs.

As for the parts, best to use google search, as an example search for: Apple 922-9878 will get you the suppliers of the Hinge Mechanism. Now the tricky part! Try to stick with the Mac part houses vs Amazon/eBay and I use a prepaid bank card to protect my self if I'm unsure who they are.

Forget the Apple parts and fixes, Google this : 27" Silver iMac Broken Hinge Solution

It’s a simple 3D printed contraption that was made to solve that specific and well-known problem. It sells for around 20$ and works like a charm.

I bought mine on Ebay but the link might change / expire over time, still here it is:
