Backlight but no picture on multiple screens replacements

I'm repairing an iPhone 5c for a friend and I figured it'd be as simple as a fix as the iPhone 4, but much to my dismay, I can't get it to work. The old screen is cracked slightly but it's got a dark hue over it and the digitizer no longer works.

I bought a cheap replacement screen (like the many I've bought for my old iPhone 4) and it has a backlight but no display. I figured it was a dud and went on to buy another one, this time looking for one with reviews (and 4.5 stars) and it's still having the same issue. There’s a display when I put the old screen back in. I'm at my wit's end and I'd like to know if I'm doing anything wrong or am missing something, or if both new screens are bad.

@celeryjack Are you getting these screens off a site like Alibaba or eBay?

@ajcooke01 I'm actually getting them off eBay. I've been doing it for years so that's just become the habit. I haven't had any issues until now. Both new screens are from different vendors. But just before this, I swapped in one of the new screens and it worked up until I took it back out (the digitizer still didn't work) and now I can't get it back on again.

Well, to attempt to rule out the screens being duds let’s try another screen that may be a step above in quality. I have a hunch because you are getting them off eBay you may be getting scammed. I would return the other screens if you can and/or get your money back in some way shape or form.

@celeryjack I completely agree with you. If you are not in need of this phone that is definitely your best course of action. If you can find a used and operable 5c for 25$ more then a replacement screen go for it. Sorry I couldn’t help you out here much! Have a good day!

@ajcooke01 ouch... I was hoping to avoid paying full price since a nice condition used iPhone 5c is barely $25 more than that. I'll probably end up trying to get my money back but if this is the case, I might end up just getting the poor guy a used one and doing a full iTunes backup and restore if I'm able to. This repair has been the most painful repair I've ever done, and that's saying something given I've replaced my old iPhone 4 screen at least 4 times (which requires a full teardown).

The 5C is prone to micro-fractures on the logic board due to the weaker plastic housing.
