we got the complete kit and followed the directions. when we plugged the charger in all we get is a white screen. what could we have done wrong or missed

Like Aaron said, try with the original to see if it’s the same. Before you do that, and this might sound silly, but perform a reset on the iPad (Home + Power). I have seen this behavior myself.

I tried this but it didn't help
You tried the reset or you tried the original screen again or both?
the original screen was shattered so not an option. we tried the reset but did not work

@icanimust Do you still have the original screen in working condition? If so, plug the original screen back in and see if this behavior continues.
