DVD Player wont' play DVD's

My DVD player stopped playing DVD’s and would only play CD’s (LG GH22NS50)

Thinking it was broken I went a purchased a cheap DVD player on Ebay (Asus DRW-24D5MT 24X SATA Internal DVD CD RW Burner)

I switched them out and I can still only play CD’s and not DVDs…

Have I purchased a dud or is it possible the issue isn’t the DVD player but something else? and if so how would I go about fixing it?

Thanks for you help.

Update (09/19/2018)

Just dug out my old DVDs and they are working fine (both Game DVD’s and Movie DVDs - Serenity played fine).. Feel real stupid.

Of course that doesn’t explain why my PC couldn’t even see (it’s like there isn’t a DVD in the drive) The last two Movies I tried to watch (Rampage and Avengers Infinity War) though they worked fine in my Xbox. (They are DVD’s and not Blu-ray - I checked)

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @spineless,

I suppose this is your PC and you replaced your defective drive.

Some stuffs I would suggest you to test out.

When you try with another DVD disk, do you see the contents in file explorer?

DVD should have folders inside like VIDEO_TS, etc

and if you tried with DVD-R Blank disk, does it works?

another suggestion is to burn a DVD disk e.g. live linux OS, e.g. and try booting by Boot Menu when you power on your computer, as trying this to bypass OS environment, to check if the drive is able to read the dvd disk.

and to confirm if your current drive or replacement is having issues…. test with another system.

Are you just trying to watch DVD movies?

If you have Windows 10 some of them do not come with software to play DVD movies.

You can download them though. One I personally use is VLC media player.

Since the CD part of it works it would be hooked up correctly. Unlikely that it is a dud.

Give that a try and let us know how it goes!

If your DVD player plays some old DVDs, it could be the DVDs that cause the issue.   Some DVDs may be region locked. You can set your DVD player to match the region.  However,  you have a limited number of times (usually 5) for changing the DVD player's region. Why don’t you digitize your DVDs and play them without needing a DVD player every time? It’s easy.
