touch ID stoped working after screen replacement

I just finished replacing my iPhone screen. First time i put it back together the rear camera wasn’t working. I took the phone back apart and reconnected the camera correctly and it worked fine. Now the touch ID isn’t working. I checked the connections but they look fine. Any recommendations on troubleshooting the issue?

Head to the Apple forums!

Hi @lee_r , unfortunately, the Apple Forums are really only helpful when it comes to software issues. They adamantly refuse to consider third party or DIY repair as viable options and can be quite hostile to anyone that recommends or performs them.

iFixit is the perfect place for hardware/repair issues.

It’s very easy to damage the Home Button when performing repairs on the iPhone. The HB has a very thin and delicate flex and it has to connect to a Home Button Link flex to make the connection all the way to the logic board. Those are two possible points of failure.

Take a look at this guide, specifically steps 23-27, to see good pictures and instructions on how to transfer over a HB. Note the flexes and connectors and do a really good visual inspection of your HB, preferably with magnification. If the actual HB flex is damaged, there’s not much that can be done to repair it whereas if the Link Flex is damaged, that can be addressed by replacing the screen.

Which part is the link flex? The part attached to the screen assembly?

Hi Ken, I just updated my answer. I was thinking iPhone 6 and not 6S when I wrote that the link flex can be easily changed. In the picture above, you can see the connector right next to the hole for the HB. That is the link flex and it runs underneath the backlight to come out the other end and connect to the logic board. If this connector or flex is damaged it will cause the same symptoms as a broken HB. Technically, you can replace it by changing the backlight but it's a not a real DIY repair. The simple thing to do is to replace the screen assembly.
