Home button on iPad doesn’t work

I am having a problem with my iPad. The home button clicks in but doesn’t register. This happens every time I come home at night and it doesn’t happen at a specific time. It may take like 30 minutes for the home button to work again and maybe in the morning to find out it doesn’t work again. Touch ID still works fine and tried all the methods online and sometimes they worked (maybe pure coincidence) and sometimes they just doesn’t work. I am covered by apple’s limited one year warranty but I would want to avoid getting a new iPad if possible.

Take it to apple, it's a hardware issue relating to the home button being faulty itself.

Try restoring the iPad first to see if that helps. You'll need to backup the iPad first via iTunes as a restore basically does a factory reset on it.

Could apple just replace the home button or do they have to just replace the whole device?

They will replace the whole device (as in a refurbished one).
