How to transfer files from a computer that won't boot?

My dell is 5 years old and won’t boot long enough for me to transfer to my hp. What can I do so I don’t lose files or have to replace hard drive?

Probably your easiest option is to remove the drive from the laptop and outboard it to a USB port on a working computer via a device like this:

That may prove fruitless if the drive itself is failing however.

Agreed. There are options that will guarantee your ability to save your data, such as tcagle53 said, so you don't have to worry about that. However, maybe you can diagnose why it wont boot to begin with, then connecting a USB drive to it would be much easier to retrieve your data.
