Laptop turns on, Startup animation is visible, screen dies at boot up

SO whenever I startup my laptop it starts fine, the full startup animation is visible. but as soon as the computer is about to start the screen goes dead. Works just fine when plugged into an external monitor. Tried booting up in safe mode and from an old system disc, same problem.

It started when I was in the middle of working on something. Was using the computer just fine then the screen went black. Now I have this weird startup problem. Thanks!

Update (08/27/2018)

I can’t see anything when I shine a light through the back. Also I should mention that when I have the external monitor in and I go to the display control panel it doesn’t register that the are two monitors. It seems to be treating the external as the only monitor.

It sounds like the backlight logic is having problems. Using a flashlight shine it through the Apple logo in the lid, are you able to see your desktop and it’s icons? If you do that verifies it.

Not good ;-{

That implies either the internal display is bad or the connection to the logic board is bad. You’ll need to open the boot cover to inspect the connector

If they don’t look nice and shiny you likely have corrosion for sitting the system down on a wet surface or had a liquid spill and will need cleaning and it still might need a new connector and/or cable as well.

This sounds pretty likely. My wife was using it this morning hooked up to the external and it came on! Though it flickers an awe full lot. The cable sounds like the problem. I’m gonna take it apart tomorrow and check the connections. This’ll be a pain but at least it’s not the screen itself as that’s just not worth the cost of replacing.
