System update problem help please

Hello, I'm having trouble understanding why my phone says it hasn't been updated before, when I got it last year it has done 2 updates but since I discovered the new message it says my texting has gone crazy sending multiple messages, I've done a factory reboot, is there a way to fix this without me having to buy a new phone? Any help would be grateful.
