Mute button does not work after headphone assembly re-install

I replaced my volume button a few weeks back and after I re-assembled the iphone back, I can't seem to get the mute button working. Does it need to line up somehow with the internal parts, or can it just be installed back?

you'll need to disassemble your phone to get to the mute switch.take a look at the part that is attached to the flex and you'll see a tiny little piece of plastic that is the switch, the external button has a small groove in it which the switch sits in. if you move the flex switch to the down position and then put the outer button in the same position you should be able to make sure that the flex part is in the groove. then you can reassemble the phone. good luck.. it can be quite a PITA.
