External Display shows black.

After turning on my mac mini, now my external HP monitor is showing blank. It powers on but the screen is just black. I read a comment on an issue simular but never could get the answer. What I did was follow this advice

“put use a flash light placed at a angle (around 35 degrees) against the face the the screen now looking at the screen do you see a faint image of the desktop icons?”

The answer is Yes, I did see the desktop and everything. Any ideas what the issue could be? Is the backlight on my monitor shot and I have to replace it?

Yes, it does sound like your display is having troubles. You’ll need to give us the displays model so we can figure out what the backlight’s light source is. It could be CCFL’s or LED.

Finding CCFL’s tubes are hard to find now, hopefully its just the inverter.

If LED then the LED driver logic would need checking out.

Update (08/04/2018)

Sadly I can’t find a service manual or schematics for your display. We also don’t have any guides either.

Given the cost of a new display is so low it just makes sense to get a new unit. As finding the needed parts will be a hassle.

Also keep in mind this Mac Mini is quite old as well and Apple has long since stopped issuing security updates. I would not use this online any longer as you run the risk of getting infected by a trojan which could expose your personal information.

Hey Dan, I have to admit, I am glad you decided to answer this. The quote I posted was actually from you back in 2015

David LaFlair it may be a hassle but keeping devices working and out of the landfill should be a major concern for all of us. Disassemble your monitor and take a look at the power board. This could be a simple backlight fuse or capacitor issue. If nothing else, I am certain we can get you to fit an external backlight driver so you can continue to use this monitor. The importance here is that we can see the board and that you can identify the LCD panel properly. Adding images to an existing question The rest can be fixed one way or another. Sometimes one has to hack things in order to keep it going. Otherwise iFixit Answers will have lost its reason for existence and we can all just recommend to go and replace broken devices with new ones.
