Riding mower wont start

My Murray 405002x8a wont start. I have cleaned carb, new battery, spark plug (getting spark), new fuel filter, checked safe switches, new key switch. when I turn the key everything turns just wont start. and head lights don't come on either? I am lost!!!!

Update (07/12/2018)

not sure if I am posting right. I found a small screw in the exhaust valve then it ran great for 20 min, then started to surge, now wont start again. I took off the air filter and I can hear it sucking air.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@stevesmurray "everything turns just wont start. and head lights don't come on either?" sound slike you do not get any electric power. Have you checked for spark on the spark plug. What exact engine model is this?

28V-707 1113-E1 Briggs/Straton Murray 405002x8a I get good spark (Shocked myself, and saw spark), removed starter cover and starter is in gauging, I am feeling so defeated..........

My dad has a Murray that started this same fault, We got the manual to see the safety switches and got voltage to the spark plug like you. Our engine was a Over Head Valve and the exhaust valve was stuck open. There was a kind of plastic melted goop on the valve stem and wd40 some steel wool and a bit of working at it to clean the valve stem freed it up. Had to remove the clip plus spring plus the cam device that pushes the valve down then a small vice grip to work the valve as it is polished and would not move with fingers. Look up the motor manual to see how to access the valves, I was lucky not to ruin the cover gasket and it is once again purring. You will have to reset the valve clearance.

Now this is my experience I am not able to look at your engine. I discovered it had no compression by holding my finger over the spark plug hole, it did not push air if you know what I mean. Hope this helps, gas, spark, cranking over has to fire up.

So I should take out spark plug and turn key see if air is pushed out valve hole?

Think it would be expensive to have fixed? I paid $250 for it 2yrs ago
