Is the iPhone 8 home button backwards compatible?

I fix phones for a living. I ordered two buttons for a couple of clients (iPhone 8 and iPhone 7) at the same time. Then I found out that the iPhone 8 button would not be replaceable by myself. (Thanks, Apple!) So I sent the iPhone 8 button back to where I ordered it and got a refund. Or so I though. It turns out that I sent the iPhone 7 button back by mistake and now I'm left with an iPhone 8 button that has to be fitted to an iPhone 7. It this possible. I've looked at iPhone 8 buttons online and they look no different from the 7's. Can I just use the 8 button in the 7 and not waste any more of my clients time by ordering a new 7 button?

I believe the iPhone 7 button will not work if replaced either. Where i get my parts from its says the buttons are for cosmetics only.

They're almost identical but the circuitry looks a little different. I did a quick look-through of the schematic and the pinouts are the same so there's probably no damage done by connecting it (caveat emptor).

Ultimately, a replacement button on either the 7 or 8 series of iPhones will be nothing more than cosmetic.
