phunkyp that let us know the exact model of your TV and post some images of what your display shows. Use this guide Adding images to an existing question for that. Ultimately it sounds like a backlight issues which could be a problem with the power board as well as the panel (backlight array). Remove the back of your set and check for obvious damage like domed or leaking capacitors etc. on the power board.
