Play/pause button causing distorted sound

So I realize I have the "Insignia" earbud headphones with the volume control and play/pause button. I've had them for about 6 months and they recently started having problems where all 3 buttons don't work, both buds have distorted sound, and people I've been facetiming are saying my mic doesn't work. If I hold the play/pause button down, then the sound returns to normal, but all the other functions of the control switch don't function. I managed to remove the cover for the buttons and it appears like there is a frayed 3rd wire that comes from the earbud side, but I don't understand where on the circuit board it should connect because there isn't any soldering near the "up volume button" that it would've reached and connected to. The other end of the circuit board clearly has 3 wires, with one of them split and soldered to the underside of the "down volume button". The mic is also on the underside of the "up volume button". I've already checked the wires everywhere else, and the 3band jack that plugs into my phone and there isn't any problems anywhere else, just within the control switch. If pictures are needed, I'll do my best. Thank you

To be honest, the headphone are so cheap it's hardly worth trying to fix them, I'd just buy another pair and cut your loses.

Yeah I know but I'd like to understand why it isn't working and how to fix it because it would be handy to know how to potentially repair more complex electronics
