Go to your local auto parts store and get some Seafoam (https://seafoamsales.com/). And get some new gasoline. Mix some Seafoam in with the new gasoline.

Drain the gas out of your lawn mower's gas tank, and fill the tank with the new gasoline / Seafoam mix.

If the engine will run for a minute before it stops, this will give the Seafoam an opportunity to work its way through the carburetor, etc., and clean the system.

I have a Craftsman riding lawn mower which was acting just like yours. A friend advised me to get fresh gasoline and mix in some Seafoam. I drained the old gas out of the lawn mower gas tank, and filled the tank with the new gasoline / Seafoam mix.

Problem solved! Lawn mower runs like new! It has been running like new for a year now since changing the gasoline and adding the seafoam to the gas.

I have heard that it is better to use ethanol-free gas in your lawn mower. Since you aren't running the lawn mower every day like you do your car, the ethanol has a chance to gum up your engine and fuel system. This doesn't happen much if at all with your car, because you run the car engine regularly.
