I just moved. Now my Viera does not have sound. The picture is perfect

My Viera responds to all commands and goes to "mute" and back to normal. The speakers are switched on. How do I open the back to check to see if any connectors got displaced from the move?

Hi @johnnyjr ,

By speakers, do you mean the TV is connected to an amp with external speakers?

If so have you checked the audio settings in the TV menu settings area?

Have you checked that the signal source audio output is OK?

Depending on source of TV signal e.g a 'box' of some description as opposed to a direct antenna co-ax connection, try connecting to different TV input types to see if audio is there, e.g. if HDMI try composite (A/V) or Component video, with audio connection if possible.

What is the model number of the TV?

hi jayeff,

The speakers I am referring to are the internal speakers in the TV. I rechecked the settings and all seems normal. Even with no signal at all into the TV, there is no random noise. I can raise and lower the apparent volume but still no noise. My signal source is a cable box. I tried with and without the HDMI interface. I was really busy today, still working on the move, but I want to try the optical output to see if there is any signal there. The TV is a TH-37PX60U, manufactured Sept 2006.. I am hoping to find out where the audio output board connection might be to see if there is a bad wire or connection. I don't have an external amp to see if there is any output signal to drive it. Sure hope I can fix it because it is a great (so far)TV.

Hi @johnnyjr ,

I'm assuming that when you state "...I tried with and without the HDMI interface" that you tried other input types e.g. composite video + audio etc and there was still no sound on the TV speakers?

It still needs to be proved where the fault actually is, either in the cable box or in the TV.

Can you connect the cable box to another TV?

Alternatively have you got a DVD player, a PC or anything that you can connect to the TV to check if the audio works OK or not?

It's no use chasing a problem in the TV until you've proven that is where the fault actually is.

Hi jayeff,

I have not tried the cable box with another TV but will try that tomorrow. Even with the cable box disconnected and the TV set selected to use the box/antenna input there is no audio white noise with zero signal input. I did connect my optical output box and got almost nothing. Whit the cable box connected, I did hear a definite click when changing channels. The audio into my headphones (I connect a optical-to-headphone converter and then connect that to a Koss wireless infrared headphone interface. I use that with the TV in the bedroom so my wife an listen to the show while I sleep.) would not change in volume from the TV control. I was able to dig out a DVD player from all the moving mess so I will try that to see what happens. Do you know if there is a diagram of the internal layout of the TV chassis? Just looking forward incase the next step does not bear fruit....

Hi jayeff,

Well tonight I am really confused. I dug out a DVD player, connected it to the TV with the 3 cable set to Video input 1. Gee, it worked! I went back to the cable box and the HDMI was still silent. I hooked up another cable from the cable box to the TV Video input 2. Silence. Back to cable input HDMI and it now was working. Then to the video cables, still working. It was like something inside the TV got reset. (I next was going to connect from the cable box to the antenna input of the TV but lo and behold there was/is no RF out from the cable box)

So jayeff, I cannot thank you enough for you assistance and persistence helping me through this problem. So great to know that there are such helpful folks out there.... And thanks also to ifixit for the forum. All OK now, and hopefully it stays that way.

Hi @johnnyjr ,

Most digital TV receivers do not have "noise" when no signal is present from the antenna as in the old analogue days. Most go to a blue screen or just black with a 'no signal' message on the screen. I don't know about yours though

Here is a link to the service manual for your TV.

When the sentence below the Document preview box changes from This file is downloadable free of charge: ...processing... to This file is downloadable free of charge: Get Manual, click on the Get Manual, as this is the download link. Be patient, it takes a little while to find the file.

Here is an image taken from the service manual showing that it's the PA board that has the audio amp and speaker out circuits

(click on image to enlarge for better viewing)

Scroll to p.26 to view how to initiate the self check function, (section 8).

Looking at it, it seems to indicate that if the audio "data" circuit was faulty as opposed to the amp etc, then the AVSWA display in the self check would show NG (no good) and then you have to check the H board IC2602. (see table on p.27)

Hopefully this is of some help.
