Can I install a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD (MZ-75E1T0B) to this mac?

Hi,

I was wondering if I can install a 1 TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD to my mid 2012 non retina macbook pro?

'MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012

Released June 2012, Model A1278. 2.9Ghz Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost, Up to 512 MB DDR5 Video RAM'

It's been really slow for some time now and I'm in need of an upgrade. I'm mainly wondering if it's the correct model and if there's a limit in size for the upgrade i.e is this 850 EVO the right model of Samsung SSD for this computer, and will this laptop be compatible with the 1TB size?

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

James

As Brian stated you're doing a swap out of the HD for the SSD as both are 2.5"

There are a few other issues that could explain a slow drive issue. As it also often related to a worn SATA cable so I would recommend you take the time to also replace that. Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and here's the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. The biggest issue I've seen in this series is the rough aluminum uppercase where the cable rests abrades the cable causing it to fail. To help protect things I place a piece of electricians tape on the uppercase just under the cable section that goes to the drive. Also don't over bend the cable where the cable needs to wrap around.

Here's the SATA to USB adapter you'll need to connect your old drive: Startech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter

You should create an OS installer USB thumb drive following this: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive I do recommend you stick with Sierra for now as Apple still has some issues with High Sierra on SATA based SSD systems.

Yes, you can install this SSD. The physical size is fine too as you're replacing a 2.5" spinning drive with a 2.5" ssd. I would grab a sata to usb cable and make clone the current hard drive to your new SSD with Carbon Cloner. Once installed, itll boot like nothing ever happened and the speed increase will be quite noticeable.
