How do I boot into utilities as my system is locking up

I turn my MacBook Pro on enter the hardware password and it gets to a gray screen with the indication bar full like it needs but it never gets to the desktop, it just sits there and no combination of keys gets it to do any thing. I am able to shut it off with the power switch.

On start up what is the key you are supposed to press to get into utilities to diagnose?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Does your system still have its original HDD or did you upgrade it at some point? If you did upgrade it what did you put in another HDD or SSD?

Press and hold "D" key after you power on the mac to load Apple Diagnostics.

Alternatively if you can connect to internet, press and hold "Option" + "D" key at the same time to load Apple Hardware Test.
