It's a security feature so someone can't steal your phone then obtain brute force access by hacking the home button.

Please show me an article in which somebody successfully hacked a touchID button and retrieved a fingerprint. It would be like hacking an antenna and thinking you'll get a cable-on-demand box.

Sensors don't keep history of what they sense themselves.

Thanks Adam. An example of security hysteria, propagated by people who know nothing and corrected by people who know something. As an IT guy specializing in security, I don’t fully understand why everybody thinks that somebody’s trying to hack them. Everybody is not a bank or IBM,. Hardly anybody cares about the hacking normal people one on one. Thank you

Chosen Solution

The iPhone 7 has an all electronic button. There is no physical actuator anymore so both the "click" and TouchID functions are embedded in the electronics of the Home Button Flex. So while you can purchase a replacement button, it will not do anything but "fill the hole".

If the problem with the HB is the click function (TouchID still works), then that can be repaired via a micro-soldering repair. If the problem is lack of TouchID, then the only way to repair it is to bring the iPhone into an Apple store for a screen/button replacement.

If the Apple service must change the touch id they will change the complete logic board too.Touch id assigned uniquely to the logic board.

by

@coros, no they have a special machine to reprogram the TouchID.

Oh I didn't know it.

You can finally buy aftermarket home buttons that have “click“ function and you don’t need to change the charging port or extra cables. Touch ID will of course not work (idk how did apple suddenly give up on such a secure technology they had going on).

EDIT:

So far 2 workarounds were designed by the Chinese:

  1. An option where you change the dock and the home button all together as the home button is designed to work through the dock. You get the return functionality back but you get an actual clicking button like on iPhone 6s and back(not a digital vibration)
  2. An option where you replace only the home button with an aftermarket one and you pair it through bluetooth to the device. so again no actual digital vibration like the original but a physical clicking button like on iphone 6s,6, etc. If you are searching for it you can just google JC Home button iPhone 7/8, etc. one model fits all.

Both solutions are not really “elegant” and not a full replacement as I would love to see one that you can just plug and play like the replacement for the old models(6,6s, etc.) and a model that uses the digital vibration instead of a physical click.

Apple didn't: The security of TouchID relies on nobody but Apple knowing how it works or having access to it's chip design. If you could clone it, you could modify it to be insecure and then sell it to unsuspecting repair agents alongside genuine units.

In the wake of the drama that Apple have had with governments over their right to access locked devices, this would allow others to gain an easy way to 'unlock any phone' and they would instantly get so many gov contracts and make so much money... and lay waste to Apple's security efforts in a big way.

I think that only apple can replace the home button on the newer devices, otherwise it will not work correctly as they need to be programmed to the specific device.

You can fix this, but you gotta have soldering skills which is very difficult. You either have to use assistive touch which can enabled in settings for a temporary home bottom. Or either go to Apple for a replacement too. You can also try buying a replacement HB yourself, but just to warn you. A replacement HB can permanently damage your phone since the Touch ID is locked to a specific board and when you change your home button the board gets confused and will give you errors that you can’t fix, but only Apple can. In some cases it will work but you’ll lose Touch ID function.

I just replaced a home button on an iPhone 7 (Not Plus) with this button:

Touch ID (the fingerprint reader) does not work, but I can use the button as a home button. It does not require bluetooth either.
