when 3g signal is switched off then theres no service

I have a iphone 3g, when ever i switch off 3g signal off i get 'NO SERVICE' but when i switch the 3g signal on, thens there is full signal.

Can anyone help me due to i want to use my handset without 3g signal switched on, i have re-stored the handset still the same problem....

Have you checked 2g coverage in your area? Contact your sim provider and check the areas you are in actually have masts for 2g. When you restore if you set the phone up as new it should update carrier settings. Make sure you back up first. Try this then get back to us

thanks for advice, i have checked coverage its seems fine, i have two more iphones there seem to be working ok, just dis one when u turn 3g signal off it it says no service..... talking in which about carrier settings i will try that that may work?? many thanks.
