Why is my home button not working?

I have an iPad that has slowed down, probably due to batteries being old, but my main concern was the home button. It really doesn’t work correctly. It actually presses and I feel it click, but nothing happens. Single click with an app on the screen doesn’t close the app, double click doesn’t close the app and bring up the other apps open in the background. I took it to Apple and they told me it’s too old to reasonably fix due to cost.

The adhesive holding the Home button bracket may have let go a bit, causing the gold contacts to be misaligned. You could try to open up the device and check the bracket but you'll need to order some new adhesive to close it up properly.
