Screen flashes on for a millisecond after screen replacement

Replaced the screen and digitizer on the Kindle hdx 7, charged the device up, press the power button and the boot logo flashes on the screen, then almost immediately back to black. If I tap the power button twice, I can see the screen that asks if I want to turn the device off flash on the screen, then immediately to black again. Not enough time to even tap any options on the screen. What could be going on here?
