Do I need a SIM in the phone to update?

My iPhone 6s has no SIM and i don't have one that will work with it. It is currently running IOS 11.0.3 and Im scared to update to IOS 11.2.5 as i don't know if I need a SIM to activate it after updating. After i restored it originally, I needed to borrow a SIM from a friend to use and set up the phone. Thanks.

Often, an iPhone will refuse to function in there is no SIM present. ... In this case, yes, you can update the iPhone over Wifi. However, if the phone is not activated, and you have not configured it, the phone will refuse to move forward in the configuration process without the SIM card.

Ok so I have been using it for a while. You're saying I can update to IOS 11.2.5 without a problem. Also its locked to sprint, i don't know if that makes a difference however. I just don't want to brick my phone updating it.

Apparently this is a problem with a lot of the iphone7. I don't think it makes sense to pay upwards of $300 which is more than the phone is worth at this point. Is there any way around this? Any kind of trick for bypassing this issue?

@Neghie Thervil I'd suggest taking up a little time to describe your issue in detail on a new question. The more details you add the higher the chance someone will help you find a solution.
