After loging in my screen goes black and unresponsive.

Hi!

Yesterday I went to university and worked all day with my iPad. I came home and I had turned off my macbook pro the night before (Sunday). However, yesterday, when I decided to turn it on it was finishing to update the OS. Everything was normal until I attempted to log in and it would log in, and afterwards my screen always goes black.

I have tried rebooting it, writing codes down, and retyping my password. Nothing works and I really need help because I use it to study and I have all my family pictures and important university data in there.

Answer this question I have this problem too

The update process sometimes needs to alter the systems firmware. I'm wondering if you may have interrupted the process here. Startup your system and let it do what it needs to if you get the login screen login and let it run for an hour it should restart on its own when its finished with the OS & firmware updates.

You do have a possible issue here which is interfering with the update process! This series has a known issue with the HD SATA cable getting worn by rubbing against the uppercase. If the system is unable to finish the update process I would start there replacing it following this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and here's the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. Place a piece of electrical tape on the uppercase where the cable rests to help protect it.

Once you replace the cable you'll want to do a full backup of your drive and setup an installer drive following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive on a friends Mac. Then using it you'll want to fully erase your drive and re-install a fresh copy of the OS and then restore your stuff back on. This is to make sure your data is not damaged as well as prevent it from corruption later on.

To prove the issue is the HD cable you could use the installer drive (created on a friends Mac) to startup your system. I wouldn't alter your drive but if you have anything you need right away copy it off.

Hi!

Check if the brightness of the monitor is off. Other problem can be the monitor's drivers or with the update the monitor has a resolution that your laptop's monitor does not handle. You can check with external monitor conected to the laptop and unistall any video card or monitor driver and restart the computer to see if this solves the problem.

A symptom of this is that you see text before the system goes up but when going up the monitor goes black. This happens when the system activates (Boom) the monitor driver or the video card if it is not the correct one the monitor or video card turns off to protect himself. This also happens with the refresh to hi or with a very high resolution.

This problem is diferent with each brand or computer model you need find the correct driver or how solve the problem changing the drivers, but you already have an idea of what need to do.

I had similar problem and it was very frustrating. After updating latest os versionon on my MacBook Pro mid 2010 and reboot screen backlight didn’t come on again. After turn off and on grey screen and Apple logo as usual. Was able to put password and afterwards screen turned dark. There was something on the screen but barely visible. Keyboard and trackpad didn’t respond. Tried hard reset and some other things but nothing seemed to help. After closing the MacBook and reopen it now works normal. Really strange.
