best free cloning software

hey guys

i want to purchase a new bigger HDD but i want to keep my windows install

so i need to clone what can i use for a 500 GB disk to clone

Hi @silentmountain ,

Just something to consider.

Replace the HDD with an SSD, install (clone) OS to SSD and use a HDD as the storage drive. Then only the OS and programs are on SSD and all your data will be on HDD

The SSD doesn't have to be of large capacity. 240GB will do.

Your desktop will fly!

Chosen Solution

Both Western Digital and Seagate have a light version of Acronis True Image.

Now if you don't have either of those brands, you can use the free version of Macrium Reflect.

The disk cloning docks? You mean like a USB hard drive dock? There is no software that come with those. You still need the software I suggest. You cannot straight copy, as Windows will not boot if you straight copy.

Why not just copy all your files to your new HDD?
