At this point I would try to reset the phone by holding both the sleep/wake and Home button together for at least 10 seconds.

The red shut down slider may show up at the top of the screen and then disappear again. Just keeping holding the buttons down. Don't let go of the buttons until the Apple logo shows up. When the logo shows, you can let go of the buttons and the phone should be working normally again. Just a attempt of course, if that does not work, I would start with a new battery and then reevaluate. Good Luck.

Did you drop it?, I dropped mine, on a carpet, but it just landed on the corner hard enough to dislodge the screen connector.

Following the dismantling instructions I was able to reconnect the cable up in the top right hand corner near the power switch.

Ironically I've just ordered a battery and power switch from iFixit because my 3G battery's life isn't great.
