Non-System disk or disk error

My computer will not boot up? I keep getting a message saying: Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. What do I do I'm lost?

@malik144 "Non-System disk or disk error" most likely a failed HDD. this error appears when your computer cannot find the OS. If you give us your complete model we can probably find more information about this for you. You could diagnose this by checking to see if the HDD still shows up in your BIOS and if your computer can load from another device into an OS.

When restarting your computer hit F10 to get to the BIOS see if your hard drive still shows up. In the diagnostics menu you'll find the Hard drive Self-Test option. See what it tells you. If it does not go to the system configuration menu and change the boot option to CD-Rom boot. Save your changes and restart the computer with a bootable CD in the drive. If your computer boots (I use a Live CD version of puppy Linux ) and see if it boots into the OS. If so you know it is your HDD that has failed. Sometimes a Live-CD can access the files on the HDD for you to back those up. After that you can of course try to reinstall the OS to the HDD but most likely you will need a new drive.
